Verwüstung

Kind of shoegazey, and people tend to hate that, but it´s damn good. I´m honestly a bit surprised at how many views that video has.

I keep hearing good things about this band out of Norway called Carpathian Forest, hopefully they get some recordings out soon!

Ruins of Beverast is a pretty stellar one. He's finally performing with a live band in April which I'm quite stoked about seeing.

Also really been loving this Russian band I found from here called Хлад. Great hypnotic atmospheres.

I didn't know panopticon was a solo act (except violins on the latest albums, apparently).

yeah, dude. austin does it all.

i mean, it still counts as a "solo" project when you have "guest" appearances, right?

Oh for sure.

oh, and BTW, check out "overton trees," by anagnorisis. austin was in that band, and wrote most of the music for that record. it's a lot more "opeth-y" than panopticon or what anagnorisis is currently doing, but there's a lot of great stuff in that album. everyone i know that likes panopticon also dug that record when i showed it to 'em.

I would link you, but I'm on mobile.

I love a lot of solo BM acts, albeit most are either depressive or ambient.

Nortt - closer to what most would consider funeral doom, but good nonetheless.

Xasthur - Not a huge fan, but "The Funeral Of Being" is a great album from this USBM artist.

Leviathan - Another U.S. project, Leviathan gives off some evil atmosphere, memorable riffs, and an overall cold feeling. Highly recommend anything on "Tentacle Whorror".

Nargaroth - The demos had help from others, but as far as I know, he is now a solo act. Anyway, I can say without a doubt that Nargaroth is probably one of my favorite Black metal artists of all time, despite the fact that Kanwulf is a big headed douche. He perfectly blends a raw style with a depressive, minimalistic, atmospheric sound. Highly recommend "Herbstleyd" and the EP, "Rasluka pt II"

Janaza - Recently came across this Iraqi, female, anti-islamic project. Check out the demo, "Burning Quran Ceremony"

I Shalt Become - some of that good old fashioned buzzing guitar filled, distorted vocals atmospheric black metal. Haven't been able to get my hands on it yet, but, "Wanderings" is my favorite album of what I have heard so far.

And last but not least......Burzum! Yes, quite popular, and somewhat controversial across several incidents, his work laid groundwork for, and arguably founded this style of black metal for hundreds of bands to follow. His influence is undeniable, and I think his work has stood the test of time. I recommend his first self titled album if you're a fan of things more second wave. However, if you like that slow, atmospheric goodness that is burzum's middle and later work, I recommend "Filosofem".

Edit: totally didn't notice that you said to skip popular ones like Burzum, Leviathan, and Xasthur. Sorry about that.

Haha, it's okay, they are good! I've listened to a few you linked, especially Janaza. Fucking awesome, is what she is.

I recently read that Janaza isn't actually a woman. I'll see if I can find that source for you. I was really disappointed. This is one source that I found, there are a few articles online though
